Bath & Body Works hand soap is in a lot of kitchens and powder rooms, usually in a scent named after a dessert or a beach. And one of the most common questions about it is whether it's antibacterial. The short answer is no, and Bath & Body Works says so itself.
Is Bath & Body Works hand soap antibacterial?
No. Bath & Body Works' own customer care page says its hand soaps are not antibacterial, but are just as effective at washing away germs when you wash for 20 seconds. That's the honest answer, and it lines up with what the FDA says about soap in general.
It wasn't always this way. Years ago the company sold an "Anti-Bacterial Deep Cleansing" hand soap made with triclosan. In 2016 the FDA ruled that triclosan and 18 other ingredients could no longer be sold in consumer antiseptic washes, because manufacturers hadn't shown they were safe for long-term daily use or any better than plain soap and water. Products changed after that.
What Bath & Body Works does sell with an antibacterial label is hand sanitizer, which is a different product with an alcohol-based Drug Facts panel.
Does Bath & Body Works soap kill germs?
It washes them away, which is how all soap works. The cleanser loosens the oils and dirt on your skin, germs included, and running water rinses them down the drain. The scrubbing and rinsing matter more than anything on the label. Our post on whether bar soap is sanitary gets into the research.
What's actually in it?
Bath & Body Works' popular Gentle & Clean foaming hand soap is a detergent-based cleanser rather than true soap. Its ingredient list starts with water and then synthetic cleansers like disodium laureth sulfosuccinate and cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, followed by fragrance. That's typical for liquid and foaming hand soaps, and it works fine. It just isn't soap in the old-fashioned, oils-and-lye sense.
The company does also sell bar soap, a small lineup of scented bars at $8.95 each.
When is the Bath & Body Works soap sale?
The company doesn't publish a calendar, but a few patterns are well documented by deal sites. The Semi-Annual Sale runs twice a year, starting right after Christmas and again in June. Separately, one-day hand soap sales pop up from time to time (one in March 2026 had hand soaps at $3.50 each). Regular price for a foaming hand soap is $7.95 for 8.75 fluid ounces, so the sales are worth waiting for if you buy a lot.
How it compares to a handmade bar
Bath & Body Works wins on scent variety, foaming convenience and those sale prices. We'd make a case for a bar on a few fronts. Ours is true soap made from organic plant oils, the ingredient list is short, and there's no plastic pump bottle to throw away. If you'd rather skip fragrance, we also make one bar with none at all, our Castile Soap, and we explained the difference between unscented and fragrance-free labels.
If you've been thinking about switching from pump to bar at the sink, the whole shelf is right here.
